Services:
- Prostate Seed Implants are done as an outpatient procedure at Buffalo Cancer Center. This procedure takes only an hour or so and the patient goes home the same day. One male in ten will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime and this procedure offers a quality-of-life solution, permitting the patient to get on with his life quickly, and to be "as good as new." Treatment offers the best chance to preserve potency.

-Remote afterloading High Dose Rate Brachytherapy for treatment of esophageal and gynecological malignancies. These treatments are also done as an outpatient procedure at the Buffalo Cancer Center.

-External radiation treatment for breast, prostates, colon, lung and other cancers using standard and fractionated radiation treatments delivered on a daily basis through a linear accelerator at Buffalo
Radiation Oncology Center. Daily treatments take about fifteen minutes.

Technologies:

External Radiation
A state-of-the-art three-dimensional treatment planning system is directly linked to the CT scan images. Treatment plans are transmitted to the computerized Siemens linear accelerator (external radiation delivery machine) for precise customized radiation treatment for all types of cancer. External radiation is usually given over two to eight weeks.

Internal Radiation
Prostate Seed Implants: B&K Ultrasound Unit to perform volume study and guidance for placement of seeds. Interplan 3-D real time treatment planning system, to insure exact seed placement. OEC/GE C-Arm: an X-ray unit with fluoroscopy used to verify correct placement of seeds.

High Dose Rate (HDR): HDR brachytherapy equipment allows the delivery of very high doses of cancer-killing radiation directly into the cancer site with much more accuracy and safety than previously possible. Because the radiation is confined to the tumor area, it spares the normal healthy tissues, thereby minimizing the side effects. This type of treatment uses a small very high dose radiation source which is computer controlled to pinpoint precise areas within the cancer site. Treatments are given in our outpatient facility so there is no need for hospital stay.
